Mark Arm is the vocalist of the grunge band Mudhoney, creator of the term “grunge” to define the style of music that he and many other groups played in the city of Seattle at that time. His first band, Green River, was one of the pioneers in the Seattle movement.

Beginnings

Arm’s first contacts with rock music started in his high school forming teenage bands like “Mr. Epp And The Calculations”, disappeared in 1982. Soon after, along with Steve Turner (partner in his old band and close friend) , they are recruited in the band Limp Richerds, although their stay there lasted only a few weeks. After this fleeting step by the band, the two musicians form along with Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament the group Green River, that would separate after publishing two EP and a great disc. Of the separation of this band they would leave Mudhoney (Arm and Turner) and Mother Love Bone (Gossard and Ament).

Arm and Turner recruit former Melvins bassist Matt Lukin, and Dan Peters to form Mudhoney, with whom they would edit albums to this day, despite being one of the bands least recognized by the public in grunge. All the albums of the band were published under the label Sub Pop.

Drug use

When grunge exploded in the 1990s, Mark Arm wrote a comic nonfiction essay on smoking marijuana and going to the Clinton White House with Pearl Jam.

He was a singer and guitarist of the group Bloodloss and singer for the Seattle supergroup The Monkeywrench. Monkeywrench members include Arm, Turner, Tim Kerr (Lord Hi fixers, Big Boys, Poison 13), Tom Price (Gas Huffer) and Martin Sosa (Bloodloss). He has also made special appearances on several albums, most notably in Alice in Chains 1992 EP “Sap.

In 1998, he made an appearance on the film soundtrack of the movie Velvet Goldmine with Ron Asheton, Mike Watt, Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley under the name Wylde Ratttz.

In 1999, he recorded the vocals for the song “I Need Somebody”, a cover of the song by The Stooges, which appear on the nebulous first album ‘s, For the Center.
