Mark Kurlansky (born December 7, 1948 (69 years) in Hartford, Connecticut) is an American journalist and writer who has written several nonfiction works, focusing on the history of certain foods, such as the history of salt, as well as the market for cod in the world and oysters, and articles about Basque culture.
Kurlansky attended Butler University, where he had an interest in theater and for this reason he studied BA in 1970. Despite his studies he started working as a journalist in the 1970s as a correspondent in Western Europe for the Miami Herald, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and eventually in Paris for the International Herald Tribune. He moved to Mexico in 1982 where he continued his work as a journalist. He wrote his first book: A Continent of Islands, in 1992 and after this first experience was launched to write various books and articles about the history of food throughout the 1990s. He wrote his book Cod (cod) in 1997 and it was an international bestseller that came to be translated into more than 15 languages.
