Mark_Egan’s Biography

Born in Brockton, Massachusetts, on January 14, 1951, Mark began his musical studies with only 10 years. Under the strong influence of his father, an enthusiastic trumpeter, the young Mark adopted this instrument, with which he would begin his professional career in different orchestras and groups of Rhythm & amp; Blues and that would become a small local legend for his great skill with the instrument. However, at the age of 16, thanks to his interest in the rock stars of the moment (Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Miles Davis, Ravi Shankar, The Beatles or Motown artists), he decided to switch to the electric bass, which, since then would become his main instrument.

Egan enrolled in the prestigious Miami School of Music in Florida, where-like his colleague Michael Manring-he would receive private lessons from Jaco Pastorius himself, and where he would form a band with other students (among them the keyboardist). Clifford Carter or the guitarist Hiram Bullock) with which it would appear to New York in 1976. There Mark quickly became noticed by its abilities with the instrument, and was recruited by Eumir Deodato or David Sanborn for different recordings and concerts. Another notable member of the Miami School of Music, Pat Metheny warned the talent of the bassist, and signed him for the first formation of what would become his flagship band, the Pat Metheny Group, a group with which Mark Egan worked until 1980 and through which he met the one who since then would become his practically inseparable musical partner, the drummer Danny Gottlieb. It was with the latter with whom Egan founded the group Elements in the early ’80s, a band that would remain active until today and with which, at an artistic and compositional level, the bass player has always been strongly linked.

In the mid-1980s Mark Egan would record his solo debut, the album Mosaic and, since then, he has developed an incessant activity as a musician and composer, managing to always maintain a high artistic level in such diverse projects. each other as his collaborations with singer Marianne Faithful or saxophonist Bill Evans. In addition, he has set up Wavetone records (his own record label under which he launches his own works and those of his collaborators and friends) or Electric Fields (a high-tech recording studio), and in parallel he has maintained a teaching activity that has led to the publication of Bass Workshop, a didactic method for bassists, in addition to continuing to cultivate his interest in Oriental Philosophy, yoga or meditation.

Although Egan has a collection of more than 30 instruments, his figure has always been associated with that of the North American firm Pedulla, of which he is a representative and which has expressly designed for him a curious double-mast instrument, the first fretless and the second of 8 strings.
