Mario Augusto Bunge (West Florida, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, September 21, 1919) is an Argentine physicist, philosopher and epistemologist. Bunge declares himself as a realistic philosopher, scientist, materialist and systematist; He is also an advocate of scientific realism and exact philosophy, and is known for publicly expressing his position against pseudoscience, including psychoanalysis, praxeology, homeopathy, neoclassical (or orthodox) microeconomics, among others. in addition to his criticisms against philosophical currents such as existentialism (and, especially, the work of Martin Heidegger), phenomenology, postmodernism, hermeneutics and philosophical feminism. He taught philosophy in Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, USA, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland and Australia. He currently holds the Frothingham Chair in Logic and Metaphysics at McGill University, Montreal.
Mario Bunge’s Biography
Bunge’s father (Augusto Bunge) was a socialist doctor and deputy, and his mother (Maria Müser) a German nurse. He was professor of theoretical physics and philosophy, 1956-1966, first at the University of La Plata and then at the University of Buenos Aires. He is currently professor of logic and metaphysics at McGill University (in Montreal), where he teaches since 1966.
Bunge has four children: two Argentines with his first wife, Carlos (a) Cantarito (physical) and Mario (a) Bambi (mathematician), and two Canadians, Eric (architect) and Silvia (professor of cognitive neuroscience at the University of California at Berkeley), from his current wife.
Mario Bunge has been honored with 21 honoris causa doctorates and four honorary professors from universities in the Americas and Europe. Bunge is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1984-) and of the Royal Society of Canada (1992 a). In 1982 he was awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize; in 1986 with the Konex Prize in the discipline “Logic and Theory of Science”; in 2009 the Guggenheim Fellowship,; in 2014 was awarded the Ludwig von Bertalanffy Award in Complexity Thinking; and in 2016 he received his second Konex Award, this time in the field of “Logic and Philosophy of Science. “
