Maria Ana de Jesus Guerrero Torija (Madrid, April 17, 1867-Madrid, January 23, 1928) was a Spanish dramatic actress and businesswoman, married to Fernando Díaz, with whom she controlled an extensive period of the Spanish and Spanish-American theatrical scene.

After receiving his education at the College of San Luis de los Franceses in Madrid, he studied, from 1885, dramatic art with the actress Teodora Lamadrid. He debuted on October 28, 1885 with the work Sin familia, by Miguel Echegaray at the Teatro de la Comedia in Madrid.

Since 1890, as the first actress of the Spanish Theater, she performed in classical works and José Echegaray with great success. He expanded his studies in Paris with the actor and director Benoît-Constant Coquelin in 1891. On his return to Spain, he began working at the Teatro de la Comedia. Later, in 1894, he returned to Spanish.

That same year, he leaves the company of Emilio Mario to create his own. A year later it coincides on that stage with the actress Sarah Bernhardt interpreting in French the sphinx.

He married on January 10, 1896 with the actor Fernando Díaz de Mendoza, an aristocrat and Grande de España ruined, with whom he established his own theatrical company. In it, great names of the Spanish scene of the first third of the twentieth century were integrated over time: María Fernanda Ladrón de Guevara, Catalina Bárcena, María Cancio, Emilio Thuillier, Elena Salvador, Josefina Blanco, Emilio Mesejo, Felipe Carsi , Alfredo Cirera, Hortensia Gelabert, Pedro Codina, Luis Medrano …

After the birth of his two sons (Luis Fernando, March 5, 1897, and Carlos Fernando, September 4, 1898), in 1899 he undertook a tour of Latin America which he followed, a year later, another tour of France , Belgium and Italy. He repeated in successive years tours through Latin America (1908, 1910, 1914 …), with special fondness for Uruguay and Argentina. In the Argentine city of Córdoba, she was one of the inaugurators of the Teatro del Libertador San Martín (called at the time Teatro Rivera Indarte); In Buenos Aires, he inaugurated the Avenida Theater and made donations to build what is now called the Cervantes National Theater. In 1925 he performed at the Manhattan Opera House in New York.

Throughout his career he premiered, among others, works by Nobel Prize winners Jacinto Benavente and José de Echegaray, as well as Benito Pérez Galdós, Eduardo Marquina, Valle-Inclán and the Álvarez Quintero Brothers.

There is a theater in Madrid that bears his name: the Teatro María Guerrero, called Teatro de la Princesa until 1931, of which María Guerrero had been the owner since 1909 and where he established a residence since 1918. The María Guerrero is a venue of the National Dramatic Center. Luis Fernando married María Guerrero López, niece of the actress. She was also the grandmother of actress Mari Carmen Díaz de Mendoza, daughter of Carlos and actress Carmen Larrabeiti.

He died as a result of an attack of uremia, only seven days after having to suspend the rehearsals of what would have been his next premiere: Doña Diabla, by Luis Fernández Ardavín. She is buried in the Cementerio de la Almudena in Madrid.
