Marcia Ball is a native of Vinton (Louisiana), although she was born in the hospital in the nearby town of Orange in the state of Texas, both of which are within the so-called “Texas Triangle.” From the origins of some of the biggest stars of the Blues, such as Janis Joplin, Johnny and Edgar Winter, Queen Ida Guillory, Lonnie Brooks, Zachary Richard, Clifton Chenier or Kenny Neal, as a child she received piano lessons from her grandmother and his aunt and soon showed interest in the musical style of New Orleans. He grew up admiring artists such as Fats Domino, Professor Longhair and James Booker, but his biggest influence, vocally, was the singer Irma Thomas.
He took his first steps in the world of music during his stay at the State University of Louisiana, in the late 60s, where he combines his studies of English with the activity as a pianist in a psychedelic rock band called “Gum” . In 1970, Marcia and her first husband decided to settle in Austin (Texas). [Citation required] In Texas she joined the country band “Freda and the Firedogs”, with which she remained until 1974, the date on which she began her solo career.
Marcia Ball’s piano style combines elements characteristic of zydeco, swanp blues, delta blues and Boogie woogie. He began his solo career recording with the record company Rounder Records until the late 90’s. In 1998 he was nominated for the Grammy Awards and the Blues Music Award in the category of “Best Contemporary Blues Album” by Sing It !, recorded album in collaboration with Irma Thomas and Tracy Nelson.
In 2000, he signed with the prestigious company Alligator Records, based in Chicago. As of that date his appearances are frequent in numerous festivales so much in North America as in Europe reaping a huge success as much of critic as of public. All his discography for Alligator Records has received numerous accolades. Marcia Ball continues, habitually forming duo with Irma Thomas.
In 2003 he participated in the documentary film “Piano Blues” directed by Clint Eastwood, in the series The Blues by Martin Scorsese.
