Marcel Moyse (May 17, 1889 – November 1, 1984) was a famous French flutist for whom many pieces were written (for example, the Concerto by Jacques Ibert in 1934). He was also a talented flute teacher and author of numerous studies and flute exercises.
Marcel Moyse was born in St. Amour, France. He studied at the Paris Conservatory and was a student of Philippe Gaubert, Adolphe Hennebains and Paul Taffanel, who were distinguished virtuosos in their time. His characteristic tone was clean, flexible and penetrating. This was the French flute style that was to influence the modern approach of flutists around the world.
Marcel Moyse was the founder of the Marlboro Music and Festival Academy. He was an inspired teacher who tried to teach his students how not to play the flute but to make music. He often acted alongside his son Louis Moyse (1912-2007), with some of his students being Trevor Wye, William Bennett, Sir James Galway, Lars Nilsson and Jean-Claude Gérard.
Marcel Moyse died on November 1, 1984 in Brattleboro, Vermont, in the United States.
