His real name was Danny Marcus, and he was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Graduated from the University of Michigan, after serving in World War II, Daniels was hired by CBS to direct the first dramatic anthology program of the chain, Ford Theater. Later he directed the first 38 episodes of I Love Lucy, a series in which Daniels recommended Vivian Vance for the role of Ethel Mertz.Daniels, along with filmmaker Karl Freund, is the introducer of the technique of shooting three cameras, as opposed to the traditional one camera.

In addition to I Love Lucy, Daniels also directed episodes of Where’s Raymond ?, Gunsmoke, Fame, Alice, Hogan’s Heroes, and The Andros Targets. Among science fiction fans, Daniels is perhaps best known for directing more than a dozen Star Trek episodes: The Original Series (including the episode “Mirror, Mirror”) and for writing an episode of Star Trek: The Series animated (“One of Our Planets is Missing”). Towards the end of his career, Daniels worked again with Lucille Ball in the actress’ latest series, Life with Lucy (1986).

Throughout his artistic career, Daniels was nominated for three Emmy Awards and three Directors Guild Awards from the United States.

Marc Daniels died of congestive heart failure in 1989 in Santa Monica, California, at 77 years of age. Coincidentally, his death occurred three days before Lucille Ball, who also died at 77 years of heart disease.
