After winning the NCAA Tournament with the Michigan State University in 1979, the Lakers recruited Johnson in the 1979 Draft, with whom he reached the NBA title five times, played nine Finals, and was creditor of several individual prizes such as the Season MVP, the Finals MVP – three times both – and two All-Star Game MVPs, in 1990 and 1992. In 1996, a group of media members, ex-players, coaches and general managers named him one of the 50 best players in the history of the NBA and in 2002 entered the Basketball Hall of Fame.

In 1991, the player made public that he had contracted the HIV virus which forced him to withdraw from basketball practice immediately. With the support of his professional colleagues, he became the first openly seropositive player to play in the NBA.
