Luis Carlos Galán Sarmiento (Bucaramanga, September 29, 1943 – Bogotá, August 18, 1989) was a lawyer, economist, journalist and Colombian politician, candidate for the Presidency of Colombia in 1982 for the New Liberalism (political movement founded by him, dissolved when he returned to the Liberal Party) and in 1989 for the Colombian Liberal Party.
Galán was the third child of Cecilia Sarmiento and Mario Galán Gómez. His father was a prominent liberal leader of Santander, who was persecuted after the murder of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán in 1948, reason why he decided to transfer his numerous family (composed of 12 children) to Bogota; He would become Comptroller General of the Republic and president of the state oil company, Ecopetrol. In 1950 Luis Carlos began his studies at the American School of Bucaramanga and in 1952 he entered the Antonio Nariño Brotherhood of Hearts School of Bogotá. Outstanding student, in 1957 he participated actively in student marches to protest against the dictatorial regime of Lieutenant General Gustavo Rojas Pinilla, which led to a police arrest that led to a night in prison. In 1960 he graduated with honors as a bachelor; in 1961 he entered the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá to study Law and Economics, founded the university magazine Vértice in 1963 and graduated in 1965. After being recognized by former President Eduardo Santos, he was hired to work in the newspaper El Tiempo. In his work as a reporter he lived in May 1968 French, was one of the passengers of the hijacked plane that was going to Cuba.
