Luis Mario Nolasco Arias (July 16, 1940, Buenos Aires) is an Argentine composer and teacher.
Born in the City of Buenos Aires, on July 16, 1940. Son of Argentine musicologist and composer Raquel Cassinelli de Arias. He studied composition at the Faculty of Arts and Music Sciences of the Universidad Católica Argentina between 1962 and 1966, under the direction of Alberto Ginastera, Pedro Sáenz Amadeo, Roberto Caamaño and Gerardo Gandini. With the scholarship he obtained at the Latin American Center for Advanced Music Studies (CLAEM) of the Di Tella Institute (1967-1968), he perfected his studies with the masters Luigi Nono, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Cristobal Halffter, Roman Haubenstock-Ramati, Gilbert Amy, Francisco Kröpfl, Olivier Messiaen and Bruno Maderna. He also studied clarinet, piano and orchestral conducting, and before fully defining his musical vocation, he had studied at the Faculty of Exact Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires. He married the pianist Ana Stampalia, with whom he had three children.
As a composer he participated in the Second Festival of Latin American Music (Montevideo, 1966), the First International Random Music Meeting (Montevideo, 1967), the Second Guanabara Festival (Rio de Janeiro, 1970), the First Music Festival Contemporánea (Buenos Aires, 1970), in the Third and Fourth Contemporary Argentine Music Festival (Buenos Aires, 1971, 1972), Expomúsica (Buenos Aires and Puerto Rico, 1976), First Contemporary Music Festival (Caracas, 1977), Festival World of Athens (1979) and International Court of Composers (Paris, 1971 and 1982). His works, among which his symphonic production stands out, found diffusion in Latin America, the United States, Canada and Europe.
He has received commissions from the Municipality of the City of Buenos Aires (1971), National Symphony Orchestra (1972) and Provincial Symphony Orchestra of Rosario (1973). He is a member of the Argentine Subsidiary of the International Contemporary Music Society (SIMC) and the Argentine Society of Authors and Composers (SADAIC), where he joined the Symphonic Music Advisory Commission.
Parallel to his work as a composer he has developed a continuous teaching activity since 1966, being a tenured professor at the Juan José Castro Conservatories (La Lucila, Prov. Buenos Aires), Julián Aguirre Conservatory (Banfield, Buenos Aires Province), Faculty of Fine Arts of the National University of La Plata, Argentine Catholic University and the National Conservatory of Music (IUNA), where he has taught the chairs of Composition, Instrumentation and Orchestration, Acoustics and Harmony.
