Louis Hayward (March 19, 1909 – February 21, 1985) was a British film actor.

Louis_Hayward’s Biography

His real name was Seafield Grant , and he was born in Johannesburg, South Africa.

His work on the big screen began in British cinema. His most famous role is possibly that of the character created by Leslie Charteris, Simon Templar (El Santo) in El Santo in New York. In 1939 he played a double role in the film The Man in the Iron Mask.

During the Second World War Hayward enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and sent a photographic unit that filmed the Battle of Tarawa, making a documentary entitled With the Marines at Tarawa. Hayward was rewarded with a Bronze Star

Another of his outstanding roles was that of Philip Lombard in the 1945 version of And Then There Were None, a film based on Agatha Christie’s novel. In 1954 Hayward starred in the television series The Lone Wolf. The rest of his television work highlights the role of judge in an episode of the series Alfred Hitchcock Hour entitled “Day of Reckoning”, released in 1962.

Louis Hayward got married three times. Their wives were:

  • Ida Lupino, actress and film director. Married on November 16, 1938 and divorced on May 11, 1945.
  • Peggy Morrow Field, Married in 1946, divorced in 1950.
  • June Hanson. Married in 1953. The marriage lasted until his death. They had a son, Dana.

Hayward died in Palm Springs, California, from lung cancer at 75 years of age. He was cremated, and his ashes delivered to the family.
