Lord Finesse is an MC and producer from the New York City borough of the Bronx (USA). In 1989, Finesse and fellow DJ Mike Smooth signed for Wild Pitch Records, home to other popular artists such as Gang Starr, Main Source, Chill Rob G, Percee P and O.C. In 1990 the duo released their debut album Funky Technician; Finesse was acclaimed for his great lyric ability. The album was produced by the then promising DJ Premier, Diamond D and Showbiz. Finesse became the leader of the popular New York hip-hop collective D.I.T.C., an acronym for ‘Diggin’ In The Crates’. The future members would be Showbiz and A.G., Diamond D, Fat Joe, O.C., Buckwild and the late Big L. This group is responsible for the recording of several underground classics of the 90s, such as Runaway Slave de Show & amp; AG, Word … Life from O.C. or the Lifestylez ov da Poor & amp; Big L’s Dangerous.

In 1991 he participated as a lyricist in the making of the album This will be mine, repeating the album The EP in 1992. Both albums, belonging to the house genre, were creations of the DJ and producer of electronic music, Todd Terry, under the sedónimo Sax.

Finesse returned as a soloist at the end of 1991 with his second album, Return of the Funky Man. The album included collaborations by Percee P and AG. The single Return of the Funky Man reached number 13 on the list of US rap singles. That same year he discovers Big L. Lord Finesse himself has told it in several interviews: a boy who calls himself Big L approaches Finesse when he is signing records at a Harlem store, pretending to listen to his rapping; Finesse wants to get rid of him by telling him to call his representative. Big L proposes to him to make a freestyle delente of him and, if it does not like it, it will never bother him again; Finesse considers it fair and agrees. The story ends with Finesse asking for his number to the promising MC from Harlem. Finesse makes Big L appear, that same year, in the remix of his song Yes You May, this being the first musical reference where it appears.

In 1994 Finesse produced a track for Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready to Die, Suicidal Thoughts, the album’s closing theme; it had already appeared in the single Party and Bullshit (first musical reference of Biggie) in 1993, producing a remix of the subject. In 1995 he produced part of Big L’s debut album, Lifestylez ov da Poor & amp; Dangerous, including the hit single MVP. Finally he returned as an artist in 1995 for the acclaimed album The Awakening; Finesse, already consolidated as a prestigious producer, produced his own album in its entirety. He collaborates a long list of MC’s, including O.C., KRS-One, MC Lyte, Akinyele, Showbiz and A.G., Diamond D and Kid Capri. The underground hit Actual Facts, with Sadat X, Grand Puba and Large Professor, was included as a hidden track on the album.

Finesse has not recorded an album since this work, but has continued his successful career as a producer. In 1997, he produced the theme Jewelz de O.C., from the album of the same name. He recorded a mixtape in 1999 called Diggin ‘on Blue. The following year he produced the song The Message from the 2001 album by Dr. Dre. He is currently working on a new album of D.I.T.C. and, with the help of DJ Premier, in a posthumous Big L album.

As a curiosity, it is the voice of Lord Finesse that is heard in the chorus of Fatboy Slim’s hit song The Rockafeller Skank (theme of the intro of the FIFA 99), where a sampled line is repeated. he who says “Right about now, the funk soul brother. Check it out now, the funk soul brother.”
