Son of Alexander J. Douglas and Sarah Jane Douglas (born Cassel). His father was a Lutheran pastor. He was educated for a priest at Wittenberg Seminary in Springfield, Ohio. After being ordained he served as a pastor in North Manchester, Indiana. In 1904 he married Bessio Io Porch, with whom he had two daughters. The following year the family moved to Lancaster, Ohio, and in 1908 to Washington, D.C .. From 1911 to 1915 he served as chaplain and director of religious affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Later he joined the Congregational Church and continued his work as a pastor in churches in the United States and Canada. His first novel was Magnificent Obsession (1929), work of which two film versions would be made later in 1935 and 1954.
In 1933 he retired from his religious work and devoted himself exclusively to the profession of writer. In 1935 he published Green Light, a work from which a film would also be made in 1937. In 1939 two Disputed Passages and Doctor Hudson’s Secret Journal were published, the last one is a prequel to Magnificent Obsession.
In 1942 he published his novel The Robe, which was a hit with more than 2 million copies sold, and which would also be taken to the cinema posthumously in 1953 by Henry Koster in the film of the same name, being the first film exhibited in Cinemascope.
His latest novel The Big Fisherman was published in 1948 and would be made into a movie in 1959.
His autobiography Time to Remember, published in 1951, was continued by his two daughters, Virginia Douglas Dawson and Betty Douglas Wilson, in the play The Shape of Sunday, published in 1952.
