William John Paul “Liam” Gallagher (Burnage, Manchester, England, September 21, 1972), is an English singer and songwriter, known to have been vocalist of Oasis and the band Beady Eye He was one of the leaders of the British movement in the 90s, and continues to this day to be one of the most recognizable and characteristic characters of British music. He is considered by many musical critics as one of the best frontman in history for his particular voice and attitude when singing.
Liam Gallagher’s Biography
Liam is the son of Tommy and Peggy Gallagher, both Irish. He is the youngest of 3 children, with Paul the oldest and Noel the second. As a child he was known as “The shadow of Peggy”, since he usually lived on it, or “The boy Weetabix”, since he liked that cereal very much. Tommy Gallagher was an alcoholic, and as the youngest son of the family, Liam got rid of his abuse, with Noel taking the brunt. At age 14, Peggy separated from her husband, and took her children with her.
His brothers agree that as a young Liam he was known for taking the contra to everyone, in particular Noel, with whom he shared the room. When he was 8 years old, he went through a stage in which he hated music, and even insulted people who passed by the streets with guitars, calling them “students”. Noel always remarked that during that stage, he was becoming a promising guitarist. The fact of having to share a room was always something that helped them to fight constantly. During his adolescence, the brothers were real ruffians, stealing bicycles, radios and cars to sell them and buy marijuana. Liam is a publicly fan of Manchester City, and of Celtic in Scotland.
His brothers claim that Liam never showed interest in music, except in the mid and late 80s when he started to like rap. In fact, Liam says he just started giving importance to music after a show at the “International Two” in Manchester, where he saw Stone Roses. Ian Brown’s band was not the main act that night, but they hung posters and delayed their ascent to the stage to make it look like that. Then, Liam began to listen to The Beatles, The Kinks, The Jam and T.Rex, and thus began his obsession with John Lennon. However, when the Roses could not get over their debut album, Liam was disappointed, and decided to form a band. When his high school friend Paul McGuigan invited him to join them, he agreed without problems, but insisted that the name of the band should change from “The Rain” to “Oasis”. The name comes from a poster of the presentations of Inspiral Carpets.
Liam was the co-composer of the band, along with the band’s lead guitarist, Paul Arthurs. When Noel arrived at the band, this would change completely.
Liam was in charge of the lyrics and Arturs of music. The themes “Life In Vain” and “Take Me” are his responsibility. The last song was the only one approved by Noel, who wanted to re-record it, however, the producers refused to re-record it.
At the 96th Brit Awards ceremony, Liam would start singing “Shitelife,” a parody of the London band’s hit, “Parklife.” In the same ceremony, Liam would also insult Michael Hutchence, singer of INXS.
In March 1996, an English newspaper paid the Gallagher’s father to meet his children, who were staying at a hotel in London. When Noel saw him he went to his room, but Liam took the opportunity to threaten his father. This was later published with the headline “I thought Liam was going to kill me”.
That same year, Liam refused to appear on the MTV Unplugged of the band, minutes before the recording. Noel had to sing, and he said that Liam had a sore throat and that he does not like to play acoustically, but then Noel would comment that Liam was a little drunk. What bothered Noel the most was that Liam was dedicated to bothering him from a balcony during the show. A couple of days later Noel again had to take the place of singer, when Liam did not want to travel to the United States saying he needed time to buy a house.
In 1996, Liam would participate with ex-guitarist Stone Roses, John Squire, in the album of his new project “The Seahorses”, writing the lyrics of the simple “Love Me And Leave Me”.
Liam married actress Patsy Kensit on April 7, 1997, before the release of his third album. However, Liam appeared in the newspapers days before, because they accused him of having gone out the window of his car, grabbed a cyclist and dragged him. Fortunately, the cyclist was not injured and Liam only received a warning. In January of 1998, Lisa Moorish gave birth to Molly, daughter of Liam, product of an affair just a week after getting married. Another incident, this time on a plane, and apparently by a “scone”, caused Liam to be banned from traveling on Cathay Pacific flights. Already in Australia, Liam was accused of beating a fan who wanted a photo. Then Liam pleaded guilty, and an extra-judicial agreement was reached.
On September 13, 1999, Lennon Francis, Liam’s second son, was born and first with his wife. A year later, he would divorce Kensit. Shortly after, would start dating Nicole Appleton, singer of the All Saints group.
Finally, in February 2000 the fourth Oasis album is released, which includes a Liam song for the first time. In May, Noel would leave the tour after a fight with Liam in Barcelona.
On July 3, 2001 Gene is born, first son with Nicole and the third for Liam. The following album of Oasis, “Heathen Chemistry”, contains this time 3 subjects of Liam, and this time one of them got to be thrown like single. “Songbird” is a ballad about his love for Nicole.
In December 2002, Liam lost 3 teeth in a bar fight in Germany. Alan White and Liam were arrested and released shortly without charge.
In 2004, it made headlines when it was revealed that he was paying 2,000 pounds of alimony to his sons Molly and Lennon. He also criticized the father of Moorish’s other son, Pete Doherty, for not having the same responsibility. The relationship becomes increasingly tense, due to the abuse of heroin by Doherty, who visits Moorish under the influence of this drug.
The band’s next album, “Do not Believe The Truth,” would again feature 3 Liam songs, and 2 more that appeared as bsides. It was speculated that the ballad “Guess God Thinks I’m Abel” is an apology for the events in Barcelona in 2001.
Currently Liam does not think he is progressing as a composer, as he generally needs the help of Gem Archer. “Sometimesget caught up in the lyrics, because I’m not good at words.”
Once Liam defined his singing as a mixture of John Lennon and John Lydon. Noel commented that sometimes he uses certain words in his subjects just for how Liam pronounces them. It is the case of “shine”, probably influenced by the phrasing of John Lennon. “Now he does it all the time,” Noel joked. Some magazines named him the “best rock singer of the last 25 years” and others gave him that position after the last album.
On stage, Liam’s attitude has been both praised and criticized. He is usually compared to Ian Brown, for his way of walking, his tambourine and the way he stands and looks at the audience. The pose in which he sings, with his hands on his back, flexes one knee to the side, with his neck facing up, is very characteristic. This pose will probably give it its distinctive tone when singing. Precisely, after many years of singing like that, added to the cigarette and alcohol, they have caused Liam to lose part of his vocal range. In December 2005, Noel expressed being frustrated with this, saying that “we chose a few songs that we wanted to play, and then Liam comes and erases them, leaving only those who can sing. Then we look at each other and say ‘shit, it’s the same as last time’ “.
Like Noel, Liam is known for his open personality and opinions without fear of repercussions.
In 2013 he discovered an infidelity of him towards his still wife Nicole Appleton with the journalist Liza Ghorbani with whom he had a daughter named Gemma Gallagher.
