Lenny Abrahamson also known as Lenny (Dublin, Ireland, January 26, 1966) is an Irish film and television director, screenwriter and philosopher. < / p>
Born in the city of Dublin, on January 26, 1966. He is the son of Edna Walzman and attorney Max Abrahamson. He was brought up under the Jewish traditions and when he reached maturity he was celebrated a Benei Mitzvah. His family is originally from Eastern Europe, including Poland. He studied at Trinity College in Dublin, where in 1987 he completed a master’s degree in theoretical physics and a year later became an academic of Philosophy.
Then he moved to the United States after having accepted a scholarship to study a PhD in Philosophy from Stanford University, but finally decided not to complete it and returned to Ireland because he wanted to dedicate himself to the world of cinema. He started directing advertisements, including a popular series of spots for the Carlsberg beer brand.
Already in 2004 he directed his first film entitled “Adam & Paul”, starring actors Tom Murphy † and Mark O’Halloran. It was a comedy of black humor, which told the story of two men addicted to heroin as they made their way through Dublin in search of a solution to their problem. Thanks to this film he won his first film prize for the best director at the Irish Film and Television Academy Awards (IFTA). In 2007 he directed the film “Garage”, starring Pat Shortt in the role of an employee of a solitary gas station in rural Ireland. With this film he also managed to win the best director award for a consecutive time and also received a nomination at the Cannes Film Festival.
Also in that same year he began directing the television miniseries “Prosperidad”, broadcast by the RTÉ radio company, written in collaboration with Mark O’Halloran with whom he had previously worked and this series was about people in the margin of the Irish society, in which each episode of a duration of one hour was focused on a specific character, including also an alcoholic, a single mother and an asylum seeker. Listed as a masterpiece of Irish television, “Prosperity” was nominated for six Irish Film and Television Awards in 2008, of which it won in two categories: best director for Lenny Abrahamson, and best script for Mark O’Halloran.
In 2012 he directed the film “What Richard Did”, which was the most successful of the year in all of Ireland and with which he won his third IFTA award for best director.
In December 2012, in an interview with Eurochannel, he declared that he was working on a British film called “Frank”, developed in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the USA. “It’s a comedy about a young musician who joins a band led by an enigmatic singer named Frank, it’s a very funny and original movie, acting Michael Fassbender and Domhnall Gleeson”
He then directed “Frank”, which was released in the month of January 2014 at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City (Utah), United States and has received numerous positive reviews. The film was inspired by Frank Sidebottom, alter ego of the British musician Chris Sievey. It stars Domhnall Gleeson, Michael Fassbender, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Scoot McNairy. That same year he announced that he was going to direct an adaptation of the novel “Neverhome” by the writer Laird Hunt, which will deal with the Civil War and that right now it is a future project.
Currently directed an adaptation of the novel “Room” written by Emma Donoghue and entitled “The room”, which has received numerous critical acclaim and has managed to be nominated for the first time in the 88th edition of the Awards Óscar in the Oscar category for the best director and in the Satellite Awards also for the best director.
