Layla Murad (en árabe: ليلى مراد‎, 17 de febrero de 1918 – 21 de noviembre de 1995) fue una cantante y actriz egipcia, considerada como una de las estrellas más importantes del mundo árabe en su era. Nacida con el nombre “Lillian Zaki Murad Mordechai” en el seno de una familia judía en el distrito Al Daher en El Cairo, adoptó el nombre artístico Layla Murad. Layla se casó en tres oportunidades y se convirtió al islam en 1947.

Leila Mourad’s Biography

Layla Murad was born in Cairo on February 17, 1918, daughter of Ibrahim Zaki Mordechai and Gamilah Salmon. His father, born in Casablanca, Morocco, was a renowned singer and musician. His mother was Jewish with Polish ancestry, one of his brothers, Mounir Mourad, was an actor and composer.

At the age of nine, he made his first live performance at a well-known concert hall in Cairo called Saalat Badi’a. The hall was founded in 1926 by the actress and dancer Badi’a Masabni, who would later become Mourad’s tutor, her first appearance in the cinema took place in 1932 in a film entitled al-Dahaya (The Victims), which had originally been recorded in silent film format. His song, “The Day of Departure”, was added to the new audio version of the film.

She was trained by her own father and by Dawood Hosni, also a Jew. Hosni had composed the first operetta in Arabic and composed two songs for Leila: “Hairana Leh Bein El-Eloub” and “Howa el dala’a ya’ani khessam”. The success was present when the prominent Egyptian composer Mohammed Abdel Wahab heard her sing and offered a role in his film Yahia the Hob (Viva el amor!) In 1938. In the years following Yahia the Hob made five successful films with the Director Togo Mizrahi, becoming one of the most important actresses of his country. In 1945 he starred Layla Bint al-Fuqara (Layla, daughter of the poor) directed by the also renowned actor and director Anwar Wagdi, with whom he married shortly after. He participated in approximately twenty more films, of which Ghazal Al Banat, also directed and co-starring Wagdi, stands out.

In 1953 she was chosen as the official artist of the Egyptian revolution. Shortly after, she was embroiled in a controversy over visiting some of her relatives in Israel. Rumors began to circulate of their economic contributions to the military forces of that country, reason why it was investigated by the local authorities. However, no conclusive evidence was found to prove the fact, at age 38 he decided to withdraw from the entertainment world, mainly due to the commercial failure of his film Al Habib al Majhoul and the censorship of his song “With Unity, Order, and Work. “Leila Mourad died in a hospital in Cairo in 1995.
