Lido Anthony Iacocca , better known as Lee Iacocca (Allentown, Pennsylvania, October 15, 1924), is an American businessman. Of Italian descent, he is one of the most representative people in the automotive industry of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. He is responsible for the creation of the Ford Mustang and the Chrysler Voyager minivan.
He studied at the universities of Lehigh and Princeton, Graduated and Master in industrial engineering.
Race in Ford
He started as an internship engineer at the Ford Motor Company in 1946; later he joined the sales department; in 1953 it ascended until head of this department of the district of Philadelphia; three years later he was appointed head of the sales department of the city of Washington and in 1960 he succeeded Robert S. McNamara as vice president and general manager.
Iacocca revolutionized the company, both with its marketing ideas and by devising new models. A significant factor in his opinion were imported automobiles, which increasingly included the North American market.
Without imagining that it would create a legend, he conceived one of Ford’s most successful automobiles, the Mustang, a sports-looking car that was sold at an affordable price and was a success. Due to his enormous intuition about the tastes of consumers, he asked the designers to build not the best, but the cheapest of the sports cars. The Americans did not want the sports car engine so much as the appearance. Ford offered consumers excitement and an elegant air at a very reasonable price. The Mustang sold more in its first year (1964) than any other Ford car, breaking all sales records.
In 1970, he was already president of the Ford company. He also directed the creation of the controversial Ford Pinto.
He was removed from office in 1978 due to his disagreements with Henry Ford II.
Race at Chrysler
After leaving humiliated Ford, John Riccardo, the then president of Chrysler, saw how the life of the company was going between his fingers. Since he did not have much to lose, he called him and gave him full powers. Iacocca brought together some of his former colleagues from Ford and launched a range of new models, among which highlights the Voyager, the first minivan that went on the market. One of his last big successes was to reunite a team that, after its withdrawal, took Chrysler to be again a very efficient company.
Iacocca was hired as president and CEO of Chrysler Corporation, a company that was going through a bad situation, only the quarter that was about to end showed a loss of 160 million dollars. Iaccoca paid all the debts in less than five years, and turned the situation of the company around. His Dodge Caravan / Plymouth Voyager minivan, introduced in 1983, was one of the best selling vehicles in the United States.
He also introduced the “K” models, four-cylinder and with a much lower fuel consumption than cars up to that standard time, which caused sales to shoot at impressive levels. The company had requested a grace period from its creditors, who surprised them, canceling the debt prematurely.
During the management of Iacocca, the company, already solvent, started alliances with other large companies such as Mitsubishi, AMC, Maserati and Lamborghini. Then he bought the last two in full.
Iacocca retired at the end of 1992, but still belongs to the Chrysler executive committee. He is the author of two books that continue to be bestsellers: Iacocca: an autobiography (1983) and Hablando claro (1988). The autobiography of Lee lacocca, published in 1983, sold seven million copies only in the US, expanding throughout the world translated into six languages and being the best-selling book in non-fiction in 1983 and 1984. Also the magazines that They interviewed and put it on the cover were searched eagerly by the readers.
