Early life

Greenwood was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Sacramento, California with his mother and his maternal grandparents after the divorce of his parents. At the age of 7 he started singing in a church. In 1969 he joined the group Chester Smith Band and made his first appearance on television. Soon after, would start working with Del Reeves.

In 1962 he formed his first musical group: The Apollos, band that would be renamed Lee Greenwood Affair and played in several casinos in Las Vegas. After the dissolution of the band in the 70s, Greenwood moved to Las Vegas where he combined his work as a croupier with the singer at night.

Musical career

While performing in Reno, Nevada in 1979, he attracted the attention of Larry McFaden, bassist and musical partner of Mel Tillis. Two years later he signed a contract with MCA Records (after acquiring the shares of Paramount label) with McFaden as manager.

His first single: It Turns Me Inside Out entered the top 20 of the country music chart. At first Kenny Rogers was going to compose the single, but he declined the idea because of the great work that was pending. Ring On Her Finger, Time On Her Hands took him to the top 10.

At the beginning of the 80s he composed the subject for which he would be known: God Bless the USA. In 1995 it was played in the documentary: America: A Call to Greatness by Warren Cheney, and in terms of popularity, it became more noticeable at moments in American history such as Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and the attacks of 2001, in fact , the terrorist attacks led the single to lead the top 20 of the sales list. Since then, the song has never been missing from memorials to victims of terrorism.

Theatrical career

In 1995, Greenwood took a break to spend more time with his wife and newborn son. In his spare time he worked on the construction of a theater in Sevierville, Tennessee, which opened in April 1996. The opening of the theater, which bore his name, gave him the opportunity to perform on stage. After the closing, the premises became a church.
