Liu belonged to a lineage of martial arts masters. His father and teacher, Liu Zhan, had been a student of Lam Sai Wing, who in turn had been a student of Wong Fei Hung. Little Liu learned martial arts from the age of 7, and during his adolescence he entered the cinema as an extra and specialist of action scenes. In the decade of the 50 began to appear in small papers in some films of the film series of Wong Fei Hung played by Kwan Tak Hing. At this time he became friends with the also martial artist Tang Chia, with whom a decade later he would form a tandem to choreograph action scenes.
In 1966 the already reputed duo is hired by the company Shaw Brothers, which puts them at the service of its most box office director in the genre, Chang Cheh. Chang and Liu started a professional relationship that will last 10 years, generating great blockbusters and launching great actors of the company such as Jimmy Wang Yu or Alexander Fu Sheng to stardom. In 1975 Liu decided to direct his own films and create a new style within the genre, with more emphasis on humor, from which films such as Shaolin Executioners or the trilogy of Shaolin’s 36 cameras will emerge. At the same time he formed his own team of choreographers, which he incorporated his brothers Liu Chia Yung and Gordon Liu. Liu Chia Liang was awarded the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Choreography by The Legend of the Drunken Monkey (1994) by Jackie Chan and with the Golden Horse Award for this and Seven Swords (2005) by Tsui Hark.
He died of leukemia on June 25, 2013 in Hong Kong, at age 76.
