Lawrence Henry ‘Larry’ Summers (New Haven, November 30, 1954) is a Jewish American economist. He was the 71st Secretary of the Treasury of the United States from 1999 to 2001 under the presidency of Bill Clinton. He was Director of the National Council of Economics of the United States, dependent on the White House, during the presidency of Barack Obama from January 2009 to December 2010.

He was Chief Economist of the World Bank from 1991 to 1993.

Summers like Charles W. Eliot was a professor at Harvard University within the Kennedy School of Government. In 1993 he received the John Bates Clark Medal for his work in the field of economics.

Summers was President of Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and expelled from it for defending unorthodox hypotheses.
