Kouhei Tanaka (田中 公平, Tanaka Kouhei?), born on February 14, 1954 in Osaka, Osaka prefecture, is a Japanese composer. He has created great orchestral works for a wide range of formats, from audio CD and Japanese anime to soundtracks for videogames.
After finishing high school, he enrolled at the National University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo, at the Faculty of Musical Composition and began studying under the tutelage of Tomojirô Ikenouchi and other professors. After graduating he was working for three years in the company Victor Entertainment (JVC). After finishing his relationship with this company, he went to study at the Berkeley School of Music in Boston, where he remained for two years. After returning to Japan, he began his career as a composer.
At the beginning of his career, and even when he was in a hotel, he was commissioned to write an inserted song for the TV anime series “Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit SSX”, broadcast in 1982, and in which he made his debut as a professional composer. Later, he was in charge of managing some of the compositions for the inserted songs of the series Super Sentai Series. His first composition for the background music of an anime series was for “Konpora Kid” (コ ン ポ ラ キ ッ ド, “Konpora Kid”?), 1985.
Highlighting his work with the soundtrack of “Gunbuster”, with which he made a name in the world of composition for his talent, and whose work is considered one of the most important and prominent of his career. He was also in charge of the composition of the music for “Diebuster”, the series of sequels of “Gunbuster”, showing a very peculiar variation in his arrangement with respect to the music of the series 17 years ago.
His compositions are especially known for their vibrating strings of string instruments. Another of his most important and most memorable works is the one made in the soundtrack of “King of Braves GaoGaiGar”, a series of anime of the year 1997 and GaoGaiGar Final (OVA), in the year 2000.
In 2002, he won the Best Anime Music Awards in Tokyo for the music for “Overman King Gainer”.
Tanaka Kouhei is an admirer of Ennio Morricone, and occasionally introduces the voice of the son of the Italian composer and his own in some of his works. Tanaka is not only a composer, since he is also quite good at singing, and his voice is about four eighths high and low. He also participates with his own voice in the composite choirs for some of his works.
