Kobo_Abe’s Biography

Kōbō Abe was born in Kita, Tokyo, although he grew up in the city of Mukden (now Shen-yang, in Manchuria). His father was a doctor and he taught at the university level. Abe returned to Japan in 1941, and began his studies at the Imperial University of Tokyo in 1943. He received his medical degree in 1948, but had already decided that he would not practice that profession, and devoted himself to writing.

His first publication was a collection of poems in 1947 (Mumei Shishu or Poemas de un poeta desconocido). The following year, he wrote and published his first novel, Owarishi michi no shirube ni (The road sign at the end of the street) in which he became widely known.

In 1951 he was awarded the most prestigious award of letters in Japan, the Akutagawa Prize, for his novel The Wall or The Crime of Mr. Koruma. Later he continued to write – especially plays – but it was not until the publication of Sunna no onna or La mujer de la arena, in 1962, that he achieved international recognition. Throughout that decade he collaborated as a screenwriter in several films, including the film adaptation of The Woman in the Arena directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara. Later, in 1973, he founded an acting studio in Tokyo, where he trained actors using his own acting methods, and directed various works.

The characteristic that generated particular fame, were his often pesadillescas and surreal explorations of the individual, which represents a milestone in contemporary Japanese society, which is essentially gregarious and gives priority to the group over the individual. < / p>
