Klaus Meine’s Biography

Before joining the Scorpions band, Klaus along with school friends formed the group The Mushrooms that lasted a short time because he joined the German military service. At the end of the sixties, he met the guitarist Michael Schenker of only 16 years with whom they formed the band Copernicus, after obtaining a verbal agreement from Michael’s father, for being a minor. For the new year of 1970, Rudolf Schenker through his brother Michael met Klaus inviting him both to join the Scorpions band, thus initiating the compositional duo Schenker / Meine.

After joining Scorpions and then playing in several clubs and nearby pubs, in 1972 they signed their first record contract to release their first LP Lonesome Crow, with which they went on tour in Germany, opening for bands like UFO, Uriah Heep and Rory Gallagher After this Michael decided to retire to join the British band UFO, after this Klaus and Rudolf decided to hire a young guitarist, Ulrich Roth, who at the request of Klaus changed his name to Uli Jon Roth, with the arrival of Uli, the band knew the success in all Germany and by Europe, with works like Fly to the Rainbow, In Trance, Virgin Killer and Taken by Force in the seventy. The concerts of the band were praised by the extraordinary tessitura of Klaus’ voice of three octaves, with surprising treble and emotive bass, Rudolf’s arpeggios and Uli’s guitar solos. After the successful tour of Japan and the live album Tokyo Tapes, Uli retires again forcing Klaus and Rudolf to find a new guitarist, hiring Matthias Jabs. After the successful discs Lovedrive and Animal Magnetism enter fully into the North American market, not as an opening act but as the main number. After they recorded Blackout, Love at First Sting, obtaining worldwide success, which led to the release of the live album World Wide Live. In the 90’s the band began an experimentation of the sound that led to the production of albums like Pure Instinct or Eye II Eye. In the new century Klaus’ work appeared on the unplugged Acoustica album and the Moment of Glory philharmonic project, and by the middle of the decade Unbreakable and Humanity: Hourappeared, surprising his fans with his crystal clear voice and that despite the times and his age has not changed or fallen from its old potency.

In 2010, Klaus and the band announced the retirement of the stages after more than 40 years of experience, with their latest studio album Sting in the Tail, ending the German legend of rock. this, at the end of their tour of Sting in the Tail announced that they would do one more for 2012 called Final Sting Tour 2012 that began in mid-January, this one is also to promote their latest album Comeblack that contains Scorpions songs naturally and versions of songs like “Tainted Love”, “Children of the Revolution”, “Across The Universe”, among others.

The loss of voice

In 1981, after a world tour and during the recording of the Blackout album, Meine lost her voice in such a way that she could not even speak. Klaus went to the doctor, who asks him what his profession was, to which singer responds. The doctor laughs for a moment and seriously advises him to change his profession. Frustrated by the adverse diagnoses, Meine decided to leave the band, but his friend Rudolf Schenker does not allow this to happen and tells him that he is a fundamental part of the band. Motivated by the support of his colleagues, Meine decided to visit other specialists in the field, and visit Austria where he started a treatment with a doctor of vocalists dedicated to the opera. After two successful surgeries on his vocal cords and a long re-training of his voice, Klaus went through the triumphant crisis. More than that, despite losing his treble level to a certain extent, he returned to the album recordings with a more crystalline voice and a much wider vocal range.

Compositional career

In addition to being the vocalist of the band, Klaus is one of the pillars in terms of composition of the songs throughout the career of the band, along with his friend Rudolf Schenker and the former drummer of the band Herman Rarebell. It is characterized by using true poems and contingency issues, both political and human rights. For this reason he can compose real gems of the so-called power ballad, as in the case of “Still Loving You”, “Send Me an Angel” or “Wind of Change” or powerful songs like the case of “Catch Your Train”, “Hour 1 “or” Coming Home “. Klaus composed the songs “Wind of Change”, “Moment of Glory”, “You and I” and “A Moment in a Million Years” entirely.
