Kirk Wise (August 24, 1963) is a director of American animation. Known for directing the animated films Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Atlantis: The Lost Empire with Gary Trousdale.
While working at Walt Disney Animation Studios. He also co-directed Cráneo de comandos, a short film for the Wonderland of Life Pavilion at EPCOT.
Wise was born in San Francisco (California). He got his first paycheck for drawing seven years after his mother presented his sketch of a garbage man and his truck to the San Francisco Chronicles’ “Junior Art Champion” Contest. Earning praise, a check and a recommendation from the local health department spurred his creativity. He experimented with clipping and movement stop animation throughout his childhood, and he participated in the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California.
After graduation, he worked as an animator on The Brave Roaster, and Steven Spielberg, Amazing Stories episode of “Family Dog.” At Disney, he started as an assistant animator on The Big Mouse Detective and Oliver and his gang before finally landing in the history department, where he met former CalArts classmate Gary Trousdale. After working as storyboard artists in the Rescue Down Under and The Prince and the Beggar, Sage and Trousdale were responsible for governing the celebrated “Beauty and the Beast” (1991), the first animated film to be nominated for an Oscar for the Best Film.
Later I would direct The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Atlantis: The Lost Empire again with Trousdale.
