Kirk Hammett (San Francisco, California, November 18, 1962) is an American guitarist, currently a member of the thrash metal band Metallica.

He replaced the previous guitarist Dave Mustaine, after he had problems with the band and was expelled from Metallica. He is considered the ninth best guitarist of the moment according to the magazine Total Guitar and number 11 according to a list of Rolling Stone magazine selected in 2003 by David Fricke, collaborator of the same.Kirk is one of the best-known disciples of the legendary guitarist and teacher Joe Satriani. In 2011 Rolling Stone produced a new list based on the votes of renowned guitarists, including Kirk Hammett himself. In October 2010, he collaborated with the Aragonese band of amateur punk rock ETTER, during the Pilar fiestas in a concert in the plaza of the same name.

Kirk Hammett was born in the city of San Francisco and grew up in the community of El Sobrado, California. Hammett is of Filipino descent on the mother and Irish-American side on the father’s side. From a young age he showed great interest in music since he started playing the guitar since he was about 13 or 14 years old. And in the big collection of hard rock albums by his brother Rick, including material from: Jimi Hendrix, (Hammett sometimes plays parts of some Hendrix songs during his solos), among others.

He started playing at age 15 and his first guitar was a Montgomery Ward. After having his first Stratocaster in 1978, Hammett tried to personalize his sound with parts of several guitars.

Hammett’s musical interests led him to the genre known as thrash metal. In 1982 he formed the group Exodus, with the vocalist Paul Baloff, the guitarist Gary Holt, and the drummer Tom Hunting. Exodus was crucial in the movement of thrash metal in California during the 1980s.

In 1983, when Metallica was going to record their first studio album, Kill ‘Em All, he invited Hammett to be part of the group, since the then lead guitarist of the band, Dave Mustaine, was expelled due to alcohol problems . After recording the album, Hammett began to receive guitar lessons from the great soloist Joe Satriani, with whom he learned new techniques and more melodic sounds for the following albums.Satriani states that Kirk was one of his best students.

In 2002 he was given a position in the “Hall of Fame” of Guitar World magazine. He has recorded and performed live with Metallica for almost 30 years and is a model for many modern guitarists.

Since he is Metallica’s lead guitarist, Hammett has written and contributed impressive riffs and solos to the group since 1983. One of these riffs, that of the song Enter Sandman, was written in a hotel room at 3:00 in the morning.
