Kenneth_Branagh’s Biography

His full name is Kenneth Charles Branagh. He is the second of three children in a Protestant family of the working class. They moved to Reading, England, when he was 9 years old, to escape the violence in the area. Ken had an identity conflict that made him adopt the English accent in his school while staying Irish at home. He was captain of the rugby and football team and enrolled in the local magazine, writing reviews of children’s books. But in 1976, when he was 15, when he saw Derek Jacobi in the role of Hamlet, he decided to become an actor.

At 18 he entered the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, whose director, Hugh Crutwell, would much later be his assistant and reference in many films. As soon as he finished school, he played the supporting role in Another Country, which earned him many awards and acclaim. But it was his role as Henry V for the Royal Shakespeare Company ( RSC ) at the age of 23, which secured his position as a new talent on the British stage in both acting and directing.

In 1987 he founded, together with David Parfitt, his colleague in Another Country, a new company, which was named Renaissance , with a somewhat unfavorable principle: the Public Enemy production, written, directed and starring by Kenneth Branagh, he received many negative reviews (especially dedicated to his megalomania). Fortunately, the RTC productions of Twelfth Night (directed by Kenneth), Much Ado About Nothing (with Kenneth as the protagonist), and Hamlet (also in the lead role), were received with critical acclaim. The press labeled him as “the new Olivier”.

During the hectic period of the birth of the Renaissance , he continued working on television and film projects. One of them is the BBC Fortunes of war mini-series. Its main actress was Emma Thompson. The two ended up falling in love on the set. They married three years later in 1989 and after catapulting in their different film careers they were known internationally as “Ken and Em”, “the Royal couple of English cinema”. Their different projects led them to distance themselves and announced their separation on September 30, 1995.

His next movie, Die was still his first experience with a large studio, the Paramount. Film that honors black cinema. He made the critics now compare him to Welles. The film was a success and allowed him to shoot the low budget comedy Peter’s Friends and then move to Tuscany to shoot Much Ado About Nothing.

Frankenstein was one of the most expensive productions of 1994 and probably the best and most faithful adaptation of the work of Mary Shelley. He intervened as a director and actor. Despite being considered a commercial failure, came to produce 106 million dollars of profit.

In 1995 he directed the low budget film In the harshest of the harsh winter that barely had exhibition in many countries and that tells the story of an atypical theater group that tries to mount Hamlet in a small rural town. This film featured the veteran Joan Collins.

Soon he fulfilled his dream by directing a four-hour version of Hamlet, with no cuts to the original work and a star-studded cast, though a reduced version of just over an hour and a half was also shown. . Critics hailed it and received four Oscar nominations. Despite the success, he did not receive any.

In 2001 he starred in the big role in the telefilm Conspiracy, (distributed in Spain with the name The final solution), which earned him the Emmy award. He decides to return to the stage in early 2002 after almost ten years of absence, but he does first as director with The play what wrote, which becomes the comedy revelation of the year and receives several awards. Again captures the success of the critics and the public, playing the role of Richard III of England in the theaters of Sheffield, in March 2002.

Get the role of Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the secret chamber. In 2003 he returned to the theater, but not with Shakespeare, but with Mamet. Edmond is a new audience and critical success. Branagh makes incursion in the great industrial cinema based on comic characters, since most of his filmography corresponds to other types of films. Many fans of the comic “Thor” and the characters of “Marvel”, are very happy with the election of Kenneth Branagh in charge of the project, because like Christopher Nolan, they are directors highly respected by previous films. Branagh maintains the project in absolute silence, and many predict that the result of Thor is very similar to the success that Nolan obtained with his vision of Batman in The Dark Knight.

For his performance in My Week with Marilyn he was nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actor. On the other hand, he played a role in the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
