Kansai Yamamoto (山 本 寛 斎, Kansai Yamamoto ?) (Yokohama, February 8, 1944), is a Japanese designer, one of the leading figures in fashion contemporary Japanese, especially in the 1970s and 1980s.
After studying Civil Engineering and English at Nihon University, he won a Soen Award at the Bunka Fukusō Gakuin in 1967. He has been a disciple of designers such as Junko Koshino and Hisashi Hosono. In 1971 he opened his own company, the Yamamoto Kansai Company, Ltd., in Tokyo.
His first collection debuted in London that same year and in the United States at Hess’s, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, which was recognized for its avant-garde collections. In 1975 he made his debut in Paris and in 1977 he opened his shop Kansai Boutique. Also in 1977 he received the Tokyo Fashion Editors award.
In 1999, he renewed the kimono with Junko Koshino, renewing interest in this classic fashion. He is known for his avant-garde kimono designs, which have been used among others by David Bowie on his Ziggy Stardust Tour, and that same year he organized a fashion show sponsored by the India-Japan Mixed Cultural Cooperation Committee.
Since 2001 he is known for his glasses, marketed by Aoyama USA. In 2008 he held an exhibition at the Edo-Tokyo Museum called Netsuki Shinten: Kansai Genki Shugi (Passionate Exposition: The Kansai Energy Principle) In 2009 a retrospective was held on Yamamoto’s work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
He was the designer of the Skyliner train, presented in 2010, which connects the Narita International Airport with the center of Tokyo. In 2013, she returned to the fashion industry at the 19th New Britain Mask Festival in Kokopo, Papua New Guinea.
