She was one of the most popular actresses between the 1940s and 1950s. Born in the popular Bronx neighborhood of New York, she did not have an easy childhood. The separation of her parents while still a girl and a terrible accident that almost cost her life at age 8, forced her to rehabilitate herself until age 12 with swim and dance therapies.

He debuted in 1938 in a musical comedy on Broadway at the age of 20, appeared in the film Best Foot Forward (1943), was selected two years earlier in the play. His career abounded in musical hits, such as Thousands Cheer and Good News! (1947), and signed an important contract with Metro Goldwyn Mayer.

On August 19, 1945, he married actor Dick Powell. In 1963, the year Powell died, he married Alfred Glenn Maxwell, from whom he separated after a few months. In 1973, David Ashrow became her third and last husband.

From the 1950s, she characterized the role of sensitive and kind girl, which allowed her to stand out in films such as The Girl in White (1952), Music and Tears (1954) or The World is for Women (1954) by Jean Negulesco. In 1951 she won the Golden Globe for best comedy actress for her role in the film Too Young to Kiss, where she played the 13-year-old prodigy Molly Potter and her older sister, the pianist Cynthia Potter.

Died due to respiratory failure.
