Julius Boros’s Biography

Boros became a professional golfer when he was 29 years old. He led the PGA Tour’s earnings list in 1952, after winning the United States Open and the World Championship of Golf, and in 1955, once again winning the World Championship of Golf. In 1963 he won three victories at Colonial, Warwick Hills and the US Open, for which he was named PGA Player of the Year, and again in 1967 at Phoenix and Rio Pinar.

In parallel, Boros competed with the American team in the Ryder Cup of 1959, 1963, 1965 and 1967, getting 11 points in 16 games, and in the 1968 World Cup, where he was second along with Lee Trevino.

By winning the 1968 PGA Championship, he broke the record for the oldest player to win in a major tournament at 48 years. After turning 50, he won the 1971 and 1977 Veterans PGA Championship and the 1979 Legends of Golf with Roberto de Vicenzo. In 1975 he lost in sudden death in the Westchester of the PGA Tour.

Boros quickly made his shots, trusting his intuition and not stopping to study the environment. His motto was “soft swing, strong blow”.

In 1982 he entered the World Golf Hall of Fame. His son Guy Boros won the 1996 Vancouver Open, so he was one of three father-son couples to achieve victories on the PGA Tour.
