Julio Ricardo Cruz (Santiago del Estero, Argentina, October 10, 1974) is an Argentine ex-footballer.
He started his career at Club Atlético Temperley, but due to the bankruptcy of the club, he was free and signed for Club Atlético Banfield (along with other former Temperley as Mariano Campodónico and Mauro Navas). There is a myth that Cruz was discovered by Banfield while cutting the grass, but the player himself denied it:
He worked as a cadet in Banfield, in addition to playing in the fourth. I liked to walk on those tractorcitos to cut the grass, and one day I saw the director of the field and asked me if I could cut a little grass because I was going to train the first. But it was just the edge of the big area, nothing more.
His debut was on March 13, 1994 in a tie for three goals against Club Atlético Huracán.
After two years, he was transferred to River Plate. With this club he won the 1996 Apertura Tournament and the 1997 Clausura Tournament, converting 18 goals in 30 matches. Thanks to his good performance, he was transferred to Feyenoord in 1997.
In his first campaign, 1997-1998, he scored 14 goals for Feyenoord, and in the 1998-1999 season he would score 15 goals and get the Eredivisie and the Supercopa of the Netherlands. After being transferred to Bologna FC in 2000, in 2003 he was transferred to Inter Milan, with which he won two Italian Cups, in 2005, 2006, an Italian Super Cup in 2005, and four “scudettos” in 2006, 2007 , 2008 and 2009.
