Josef Mengele Short Bio

Josef Mengele / joːzəf mɛngələ /, (Günzburg, Bavaria, March 16, 1911 – Bertioga, Brazil, February 7, 1979) was a doctor, anthropologist and German officer of the Schutzstaffel ( SS) during the Second World War in the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he was a notorious member of a group of doctors responsible for the selection of victims who were to be executed in the gas chambers and carried out deadly experiments with prisoners. The newly arrived inmates were divided between those who considered themselves fit for forced labor and those who were not, who were immediately killed in the gas chambers. Mengele left Auschwitz on January 17, 1945, shortly before the arrival of Red Army troops who liberated the concentration camp. After the end of the war he fled to South America, where he avoided being captured until his death.

Mengele earned a Ph.D. in anthropology and medicine from the University of Munich and began a career as a researcher. He joined the Nazi party in 1937 and the SS in 1938. At the beginning of World War II, he was assigned as a battalion medical officer, but in early 1943 he moved to the service of concentration camps and was assigned to Auschwitz. There he had the opportunity to perform genetic experiments on humans, often on twins, without taking into account the welfare and safety of their victims.

With the help of a network of former members of the SS, Mengele sailed to Argentina in July 1949. He initially lived in Buenos Aires and the surrounding area, but fled to Paraguay in 1959 and to Brazil in 1960 pursued by West Germany, Israel and Cazanazis like Simon Wiesenthal, who wanted to take him to trial. Despite requests for extradition from the government of West Germany and the clandestine operations of the Mossad – the Israeli intelligence service – Mengele avoided arrest. He drowned while swimming on a Brazilian beach in 1979 and was buried under a false name. His remains were exhumed and identified by a forensic examination in 1985.
