José Maldonado González (Tineo, Asturias, November 12, 1900 – Oviedo, February 11, 1985) was a Spanish politician from the time of the Second Spanish Republic, who served as the last president of the Spanish Republic in exile.
Born in Tineo (Asturias) in 1900, he studied the Baccalaureate at the Jesuit School in Gijón, where he studied the first two courses, to finish his studies at the Oviedo Institute. At the University of Oviedo, he enrolled in the Faculty of Law, where he graduated in 1920. While doing military service, he married Rosalía Pérez Fernández and when he finished, he installed a law firm in his native town. By this time, it begins to show its sympathies by the leftist and republican ideas, being sympathizer of the Grouping of Students leftist and later affiliating to the Radical Socialist Republican Party.
In the municipal elections of April 12, 1931 is elected councilor in the district of Tuña (parish of the council of Tineo), as a member of the Republican-Socialist coalition, and appointed mayor to be the city council; He held this position until 1933, the year in which the council of Tineo won the Radical Party by simple majority, the latter having to agree with the CEDA. After the proclamation of the founding Republic, along with several personalities among which stands out Leopoldo García Alas Argüelles (son of writer Leopoldo Alas “Clarín”), the Asturian Grouping of the Radical Socialist Republican Party, with which it is presented in the Union coalition of Left to the general elections of 1933, without achieving deputy’s act. As a result of the union between the PRRSI and Republican Action, in 1934, and later the creation of Republican Left, Maldonado is elected president of the provincial committee of Asturias for this party, with which he participated in the Popular Front candidacy in the elections of 1936, being elected deputy to Cortes and participating in the commissions of Public Instruction and Agriculture.
Once the civil war began, he became part of the Interprovincial Council of Asturias and León in December 1936, holding the post of Public Works Counselor, as representative of the Republican Left; Later, with the creation of the Sovereign Council of Asturias and León, he continued to hold the same position in the new institution. But on October 21, 1937, with the occupation of Asturias by the insurgents, flees to France, to join the territory again in Republican hands, being appointed Director General of Roads in the second government of Juan Negrin (1938-1939), charge which he held until the end of the war.
Already in exile he was part of various governments of the Republic being a prominent minister, as Minister of Justice between 1947 and 1951, year in which he resigned after taking over the Presidency of the Government Félix Gordón de Ordás and new minister of Justice and Information (1962-1969) during the government of Claudio Sánchez-Albornoz, resigning later to take charge of the vice-presidency of the Cortes. In 1959, the Republican and Republican Left parties united to create the Spanish Democratic Republican Action, of which Maldonado will be its first president, and he held various teaching positions in Paris, the city where he lives. In 1971 he replaced Luis Jiménez de Asúa as President of the Republic in exile after the death of the former.In 1977, with the restoration of democracy in Spain, he agreed to cease international relations, in agreement with President José López Portillo in Mexico. After this he returned to his native Asturias.
He died in Oviedo on February 11, 1985, suffering from pneumonia, and it will be here where he will be buried. Currently rests in La Espina, in the council of Salas. The city council of Oviedo has named a street in his honor and is located in the neighborhood of La Ería.
