Johnny Mathis’s Biography

Mathis was born in Gilmer, Texas, being the fourth of the seven children of Clem Mathis and his wife Mildred Boyd. The family moved to San Francisco, California, on Ave. 32, in the Richmond District, where Johnny grew up. His father worked for a while in vaudeville, and when he saw the budding talent of his son, elder Clem Mathis, he bought an old 25 dollar upright piano to encourage his efforts. Mathis began to learn from his father the songs and the routines. His first song was “My blue heaven”. Mathis began singing and dancing for home visits and then, publicly, at school and church functions.

When he was 13 years old, vocal master Connie Cox accepted him as his student but working around his house. Johnny studied with Cox for six years, learning vocal scales and voice strengthening exercises, singing classical and operetta. He is one of the few singers who received vocal exercises for years that included opera. The first band where he sang was formed by his high school friend Merl Saunders. Mathis mentioned at his funeral in 2008 that thanks to him, he had the first opportunity as a singer.

Mathis was an athlete star at the George Washington High School in San Francisco, California. He was a great hurdler of fences and he played in the basketball team.
