John Christopher Wells (March 11, 1939). MA (Cambridge), PhD (University of London) is a British phonetician and professor of Esperanto at the University College of London, where until 2006 he held the Ph.D. Chair.

He is known for his book and cassette Accents of English, the book and I gave The Sounds of the IPA, Lingvistikaj Aspektoj of Esperanto, and the Longman Pronunciation Dictionary. He is the author of the most used English-Esperanto dictionary and is also the inventor of the phonetic alphabet X-SAMPA. A considerable part of Wells’ research focuses on the phonetic description of English varieties. Since 2003 he is the president of the International Phonetic Association.

Wells is a well-known defender of the Esperanto language. He was president of the Universal Esperanto Association between 1989 and 1995, and is currently president of the Akademio de Esperanto.
