John Michael Turturro (Brooklyn, New York, February 28, 1957) is an American-Italian actor and director, spanning four decades during which he has performed in more than eighty films. In comic and dramatic roles, he has also worked occasionally in theater and television and directed five feature films. He has received several awards and nominations for his work both in front of and behind the scenes and is considered an important figure in independent film because of his long career in films far from the commercial circuit.
After debuting in the cinema with Martin Scorsese with a short role in Toro salvaje (1980), he stood out as starring and supporting characters in films such as Five Corners (1987), Do the Right Thing (1989) , Miller’s Crossing (1990), Barton Fink (1991), Quiz Show: The Dilemma (1994), Box of Moonlight (1996), The Great Lebowski (1998), O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) and The Secret Window (2004). For his performance in Barton Fink, Turturro was awarded the Cannes Film Festival prize for best actor and the David di Donatello prize for the best foreign actor. During his later career, he had roles in blockbusters such as Collateral Damage (2002), The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009), comedies with Adam Sandler and four installments of the Transformers saga (2007-2017). some Italian film productions such as Mia madre (2015) by Nanni Moretti, with several collaborations with filmmakers such as Spike Lee and the Coen brothers, and less frequently, as a television interpreter; in 2004 he won the Primetime Emmy Award for best guest actor for his role in Monk, and has starred in other series such as The Bronx Is Burning (2007) and The Night Of (2016). 
In addition to acting, he has served as a writer and director in film and theater. His first feature film, a drama based on his father’s life, was called Mac (1992) and received praise from critics.  Other of his work as a director are the musical comedy Romance & amp; Cigarettes (2005), the documentary about Neapolitan music Passione (2010) and the comedy co-starring Woody Allen, Fading Gigolo (2013). In 2011, he made his Broadway debut with the original Relatively Speaking.  His experience in directing earned him recognitions at the Cannes, Sundance and Venice festivals.
