John Rogers Searle Short Bio
John Rogers Searle (Denver, Colorado, July 31, 1932) is a “Slusser” professor of philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley, and is noted for his contributions to the philosophy of language , to the philosophy of the mind and of the conscience, to the characteristics of the social realities in front of the physical realities, and to the practical reasoning. He was awarded the Jean Nicod Prize in 2000 and is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
Apart from his academic activity, Professor Searle was also the first professor in practice to join the Free Speech Movement at the University of Berkeley. Searle studied at the University of Oxford thanks to a Rhodes scholarship.
John Searle is well known for the development of a thought experiment called the “Chinese room” argument. He created it to demonstrate that human thought is not composed of simple computational processes.
Participated in the international conference on science-faith dialogue, held in the Vatican City in 2000, as part of the Jubilee of Scientists.
In 2013 he was elected to give the chair Professor Alberto Magno of the University of Cologne, Germany, which has been taught by philosophers such as Arthur C. Danto, Jean-Luc Nancy, Giorgio Agamben, Enrique Dussel, Noam Chomsky and Martha Nussbaum.
