John Pemberton’s Biography

John Pemberton was born on July 8, 1831, in Knoxville, Crawford County, Georgia. His father was James Clifford Pemberton, brother of Confederate General John Clifford Pemberton. Pemberton was raised in Rome, Georgia, entered the Reform Medical College of Georgia, in Macon, and in 1850, at the age of nineteen, he obtained the license to practice the profession of pharmacist. Shortly thereafter, he met Ann Eliza Clifford Lewis of Columbus, Georgia, who had been a student at Wesleyan College in Macon. In 1853, they were married in Columbus and had a son, Charles Ney Pemberton, who was born in 1854.

During the Civil War, serving in the 12th Cavalry Regiment of the Confederate Army, John Pemberton was wounded in April 1865 at the Battle of Columbus, Georgia, during a cavalry charge, where he received a saber cut In the chest, the pain caused him an addiction to morphine, which he used to calm the discomfort and pains, looking for a cure for his addiction, he dedicated himself to inventing a drink that could cure it, and achieved Coca-Cola. At first he called it Pemberton’s French Wine Coca (French Wine of Coca de Pemberton).

His biggest obsession was to invent “the final medicine and the perfect alcoholic beverage.” [quote & nbsp; required] Then he discovered reports on the virtues of the coca plant, which was reputed to act as a stimulant, a digestion aid, an aphrodisiac and that prolonged life.
