He studied at Harrow and the University of Oxford, where he received his doctorate in law in 1890, although he soon began to write, perhaps because of his friendship with Joseph Conrad.

In 1899 he published his first novel, Jocelyn, under the pseudonym “John Sinjohn” that he would use for some time. In 1906 he premiered his first play, The Silver Box, which was a success, followed by A Man of Property (The owner) with which he started the famous series The Forsyte saga, initially designed to 5 volumes In this series a whole set of situations of the family life of the upper middle class of England, both from the Victorian and modern times, is shown. After the initial title, he published The Indian Summer of a Forsyte (1918), In the Court (1920), Awakening (1920) and Is rented (1921).

He extended this narrative cycle in other novels and short stories of the same characters and themes, among which The White Monkey (The White Monkey, 1924), The Silver Spoon (The Silver Spoon, 1926) and Swan Song ( The Song of the Swan, 1928), published under the title of A modern comedy in 1929. These were followed in turn by young hopes in 1931.

Installed in Sussex, Galsworthy wrote many plays and novels, confirming himself as one of the most prolific writers of his time. Among his plays are Justice (1910), The Skin Game (1920) and Old English (1924). His novels also include The Patrician (1911), The Dark Flower (1913), The Freelands (1915) and Saint’s Progress (1919). His short stories were collected and published in 1927 under the title of Caravan.

In 1932 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in recognition of his eminent descriptive power.

In 1967 the BBC made and broadcast a television series based on the Forsyte saga that reached enormous popularity in Britain and in many other countries.
