John Herbert Dillinger (June 22, 1903 – July 22, 1934) was a bank robber of the United States, considered one of the many icons of popular culture in that country.

His fame is due to the idealization that has been made of his procedures as a thief and the easy way in which he escaped from the police and prison. His exploits, along with those of other raiders of the time, such as Bonnie and Clyde or Kate “Ma” Baker, caught the attention of the American press and its readers during the 1930s. His popularity has made him a legend, despite having been one of the most wanted thieves of his time.

John_Dillinger’s Biography

He was born on June 22, 1903 in Indianapolis, Indiana. His parents were John Wilson Dillinger (1864-1934) and his first wife, Mary Ellen Lancaster (1860-1907). He enlisted in the Navy of the United States, but defected a few months later, so he was discharged without military honor. He returned to Indiana, where he married on April 12, 1924, with his girlfriend, Beryl Ethel Hovious, only 16 years old, in an attempt to settle his life. However, she had difficulty getting a job and her marriage collapsed, so they divorced on June 20, 1929.

One night in 1924, Ed Singleton, an occasional criminal and friend, convinced him to collaborate in the assault on a well-known shopkeeper in the town, named Frank Morgan. The police captured them after the assault. Singleton hired a lawyer to appeal his sentence, for which he was sentenced to only two years in prison, while Dillinger himself, who could not count on legal representation, was convicted and sent to prison. His sentence was nine years. In prison, he was a prominent member of the baseball team: he played so well that it was commented that under normal conditions, he could have become a professional player. [Quote required]
