John Charles , CBE (December 24, 1931 – February 21, 2004) was a British footballer.

John Charles was one of the best British players of all time. He was born on December 24, 1931 in Swansea (Wales). It was formed in the quarries of the homonymous club. At age 16 he made his debut with Leeds United as midfielder, a position where he played until 1953, the year in which he moved to the top of the attack. He made his debut with the national team the following year in the 0-0 with Ireland, becoming the youngest player, with 17 years (he would play in total 38 international matches and would score 15 goals). In 1957, in his last season in the club where he stood out, he is proclaimed top scorer of the English league scoring 38 goals. That same year he would be transferred to Juventus FC, debuting, with 26 years, on September 8 with a 3-2 victory over Hellas Verona.

In his first season in the ranks of Vecchia Signora he became the top scorer in Serie A with 28 goals, forming with Giampiero Boniperti and Enrique Omar Sívori, “El Trío Mágico” during 5 seasons (between 1957 and 1961 ), conquering the Scudettos of 1958, 1960 and 1961 and the Italian Cup on two other occasions (1959 and 1960).

He played his only World Cup in Sweden 1958, but because of an injury he does not play the quarter-final match against Brazil (0-1 defeat). In mid-1961, he returned to Leeds, but soon returned to Italy to defend Como, although a few months later he signed for Cardiff City Welsh, where he would end his career as a footballer in 1966. In 1966 he began his outstanding technical work with Hereford United FC until 1972 where he would end his career as a footballer. < / p>

In 2002, as a leader, he became vice president of the Welsh Football Federation and would later receive the Order of the British Empire.

Died on February 21, 2004 at 72 years of stroke in the city of Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

He was named by his national federation Gold Player to UEFA in 2005.
