Carmack grew up in Kansas City and became interested in computer science from a very young age. At age 14 Carmack and other friends tried to steal an apple II but were captured and Carmack spent a year in a children’s home, according to his psychologist “he had no empathy for other humans.” When his parents left he bought an Apple II computer and locked himself in his room for days, where he began to program his own games. He studied at the University of Kansas for two semesters before leaving school to work as an independent programmer. Softdisk, a gaming company, hired Carmack joining it with John Romero, another future member of id Software. In Softdisk they produced the first of the Commander Keen series of games in 1990, before Carmack and the rest of the team left the company to create id.
Carmack’s abilities as a programmer allowed the development of the first first person action games (First Person Shooter or FPS), Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake, among others. The game engines produced by Carmack have always obtained the greatest advantage of developments in PC hardware before other developers. Carmack is the author of several algorithmic techniques for computer graphics, in particular the frisking of surfaces.
Recognized as one of the technical leaders in the world of computer games, Carmack’s game engines have been licensed and used in some of the most influential first-person action games in the history of the genre, including Half -Life and Medal of Honor.
His last job in id software before going to Oculus Vr was the graphic engine called “id Tech 5”. This graphic engine is part of the title of software id called “Rage” that came out in October 2011. Later they will use the “id Tech 6” in “Doom 4”.
