John Bunny’s Biography

John Bunny studied in Brooklyn and worked as a store clerk before joining a small theater company with which he toured the eastern United States. After dedicating himself for several years to acting, especially in light comedy, he came to the cinema in 1910, when he was hired by Vitagraph Studios. In the next five years he would appear in some 260 short films where he developed a series popularly called Bunnyfinches or Bunnygraphs, a name that meets his with that of his cinematographic partner, Flora Finch.

He met a rapid popularity, which made him one of the first stars (if not the first) of the American silent cinema. Man of rotund and obese appearance (he weighed around 100 kilos and was of short stature), represented in his comedies to a husband who had constant problems with his wife. You can also see him rarely in any other film, such as Little Nemo, in 1911, where he appears as one of the friends of the cartoonist Winsor McKay, who explains to them how to make an animated film.

At his death, in April 1915, victim of Bright’s illness, his popularity was such that the news occupied the front pages of several publications. However, it was completely forgotten by later generations, both by the public and by the film critics. A New York theater took his name for several years, and even in Russia, a local comedian copied the character of John Bunny under the name of Poxon.

Today John Bunny has a star that remembers him on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1715 Vine Street).
