John Bell

John Stewart Bell FRS (June 28, 1928 – October 1, 1990) was an Irish physicist known for formulating Bell’s theorem.

John Bell’s Biography

First years

Bell was born in Northern Ireland, of Scottish parents and graduated in experimental physics from Queen’s University of Belfast in 1948. He received his doctorate in 1956 from Harwell as a specialist in elementary particle physics and quantum field theory. His career began in 1949 at the UK Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE), in Malvern, Great Britain and the Harwell Laboratory. After several years, he moved to the laboratories of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). He worked almost exclusively on theoretical particle physics and accelerator design, but his hobby was the study of the basics of quantum theory.

Bell’s Inequality

In 1964 he wrote a text entitled “On the Einstein-Podoslky-Rosen paradox” (“On the Einstein-Podoslky-Rosen Paradox”). In this work, he showed some particular features of the EPR paradox, thus deriving Bell’s inequality, which is applied in Quantum Mechanics to mathematically quantify the implications theoretically raised in the EPR paradox and thus allow for its experimental demonstration.

Bell’s theorem highlights the principle of local causes (a principle that postulates that what happens in a region of space does not depend on variables controlled by an experimenter in another distant region), and seems to imply that our The universe is “non-local”, which does not have separate parts (except for our perception) and there are unknown “non-local” variables.

His theorem showed that the principle of causal locality is incompatible with the statistical predictions of quantum theory.

Bell died unexpectedly in 1990 of a cerebral hemorrhage.

In 2008 the John Stewart Bell Prize for Research on the Fundamental Issues of Quantum Mechanics and Applications was established by the Center for Quantum Information and Quantum Control at the University of Toronto and awarded since 2009.
