First years

Richardson was born in London into a family dedicated to acting. Joely is the daughter of actress Vanessa Redgrave and director Tony Richardson, granddaughter of Sir Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson, sister of actress Natasha Richardson, half sister (on the mother’s side) of filmmaker Carlo Nero, sister-in-law of actor Liam Neeson, and niece of Lynn Redgrave (1943-2010) and Corin Redgrave. His first appearance would be as an extra at age three in the version his father made in 1968 of The Charge of the Light Brigade.


Despite this debut, Joely tried to be a gymnast before entering the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Her first recognized role was in the film of her father Hotel New Hampshire, where she played a waitress who was transformed in the first love of a boy who worked and lived in a hotel owned by his father. After Wetherby or Body Contact, also appears in the storyteller where he plays the princess in The Three Ravens (1987), by Jim Henson. In 1998, in the popular movie The Echo, Richardson played a rich woman in whose garage was a dead man. The following year, he would star in the futuristic horror film Event Horizon where he plays Lieutenant Starck, a member of a rescue team that was going to a place near Neptune to look for a ship that had been lost seven years ago.

In 2000, Richardson would work with Mel Gibson in the hit movie The Patriot, based on the War of Independence of the United States. Richardson plays the sister-in-law of a man (Mel Gibson), who was forced to fight the English after the murder of his wife. In that same year, would incarnate to the same queen Marie Antoinette in the film directed by Charles Shyer The case of the necklace and in Maybe Baby.

Starting in 2003, Richardson would begin his participation in the series Nip / Tuck, the controversial series based on the lives of Miami plastic surgeons. His mother, Vanessa Redgrave, would appear in several episodes in the role of the mother of his character.

In 2005, Richardson starred in Lies My Mother Told Me, based on the true story of a woman who travels with her teenage daughter, profiting from credit card theft and the use of false identities.

One of his last works was in the series The Tudors where he played the Queen of England Catherine Parr, the last of the wives of King Henry VIII.

Private life

Divorced from producer Tim Bevan, she has a daughter, Daisy, who was born in 1992. In November 2006, she announced that she was leaving the Nip / Tuck series to take care of her sick daughter. His last appearance would be in episode 14, although the writer Ryan Murphy would write different endings in the event that Richardson wanted to return. Shortly after the end of the season, the actress’ return for the fifth season of Nip / Tuck was announced, although her role would be more secondary.
