Joel Coen Short Bio
Joel David Coen (November 29, 1954) and Ethan Jesse Coen (September 21, 1957), [n. 3] known professionally as the Coen brothers , are two American filmmakers who won four Oscars, two BAFTAs and one Golden Globe, among other recognitions.
His beginnings in the film industry date back to the early 1980s, when Joel worked as a mounting assistant on low-budget horror films and Ethan worked as a screenwriter on the Cagney & Police detective series. Lacey, meanwhile, began writing the screenplay of their directorial debut, the neo-noir thriller Blood Simple (1984), whose modest success at the box office and at the critical level managed to open the way for them and made them known as part of A new generation of independent directors, they have since worked together to write, produce, direct and assemble their own films. Due to their tendency to work together and their similar artistic vision, they have been referred to as the “double headed director” -two-headed director- Among his films are such titles as Miller’s Crossing (1990), Barton Fink (1991). ), Fargo (1996), The Great Lebowski (1998), O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), The Man Who Was Not There (2001), No Country for Old Men (2007) and True Grit (2010). His films are characterized by combining genres, containing eccentric characters, complex plots, black humor, portraying violence, and being influenced by literary sources and genres of classical cinema -especially black cinema-. Resources such as the genre mix and the influence of past cinema have led film theorists to consider the Coen films as examples of postmodern cinema. Due to their characteristic style and the creative freedom they possess in their productions, the Coen have been described by some film critics as authors, although they themselves reject that denomination.
Throughout a career that has spanned four decades, the Coens have been able to enthuse both the public and film critics. They have also been winners of multiple awards; One of his first most important recognitions was thanks to Barton Fink, a film for which they won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. After the success of Fargo in 1996, they received several prizes, including the Cannes Film Festival Award for best director, the Oscar for the best original screenplay and BAFTA for the best director. Already entered the new millennium, they achieved excellent results with No Country for Old Men, for which they won three Oscars -including best film-, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and several additional prizes.
In addition to producing their own films, the Coens have intervened as screenwriters or executive producers in films by other filmmakers. One of his first collaborators was the director Sam Raimi, whom Joel met while working on The Evil Dead (1981), along with Raimi they wrote Crimewave (1985) and The Big Leap (1994), the first film directed by Raimi and the second for the Coens. Later they worked as producers in Bad Santa (2003) and as screenwriters in Unbroken (2014). For his part, Ethan has served as a writer of theater, short stories and poetry; Among his most notable works is the book Gates of Eden (1998), a collection of stories influenced by noir themes and his own youth.
