He grew up on a small ranch near Reno (Nevada), later went to the Ojai Valley School in California and the University of Colarado in Boulder.
Flanigan married the actress and painter Katherine Kousi, with whom she has three children. They divorced in 2014.
Outside the shootings, he is a great skier and climber, he also likes surfing, tennis, horse riding and motorcycles.
Joe currently resides in Los Angeles whenever he does not have to go to Canada to play Lieutenant Colonel John Sheppard for the Stargate Atlantis series.
