Joe_Besser’s Biography

From a very early age he was encouraged by his family to dedicate himself to acting. At some point he even commented: “I learned more in the theater than in the school”. His career began in 1928 and he devoted himself entirely to comedy.

Even before joining the Three Stooges to replace Shemp Howard in 1956, he was known and had acted in various films and even in several television programs.

Joe was also famous for his character named “Stinky” on the Abbott and Costello Show (he performed in 13 episodes), and for the voice of “Babu” on the humorous strip “Jeannie” by Hanna Barbera.

In the late 1930s, Columbia Pictures offered Besser an exclusive contract and placed him in films and short comedies. He made his screen debut in a 1938 film, “Cuckoorancho”. His credits at Columbia include “Hey, Rookie!” (1944) with Ann Miller and Larry Parks, and “Eadie Was a Lady” (1945) and “Talk About a Lady” (1946) both with Jinx Falkenburg. In several of his short comedies he is seen doing a comical duo with Jim Hawthorne.

Joe did not socialize much during his work hours, and even later. It went straight to the point when it came to acting. And Besser rarely took the initiative to make new friends. He only went to the studio, did his work and returned home to devote himself to a quiet life. As for his association with the Stooges, with whom he did not see himself off screen, Joe had nothing but fond memories. Besser recalls, “Moe and Larry were great, we had a lot of fun and I had no problems with them, I knew them from when they were with Ted Healy, and after that time, I followed their careers, I’m happy to have joined the Stooges and I never I regretted it. “

However, his excessively naive and somewhat mannered humor did not fully adjust to the type of comedy that The Three Stooges had in all their previous careers. Although his income gave vitality and energy to the group, already in itself quite battered due to the two previous deaths.

After two years and only sixteen shorts made with The Three Stooges, Columbia decided not to renew the contract for 1958 and finally closed its shorts department.

Joe Besser left the group early that year, when his wife suffered a heart attack, and from then on he participated in films of 20th Century Fox, in comedies by Jerry Lewis and in many television shows of the decade of 1960, mainly on Joey Bishop’s show.

It is recognizable in two films by the comic duo Abbott and Costello: in “Africa Screams” (1949), where she performs curiously with Shemp Howard, and in “Abbott and Costello meet the Keystone Kops” (1954), where she makes short films cameos.

Among his hobbies, he liked to build toys to give to the kids in his neighborhood. Joe Besser was also very fond of magic presentations.

His favorite comedians were Jack Benny and Abbott and Costello, and Ann Miller his choice as an actress. Joe did not see all the shorts he did with the Stooges, but his favorite was “Flying Saucer Daffy” (1958). Instead his fans prefer “Hoofs and Goofs” (1957) and “A Merry Mix-Up” (1957).

On March 1, 1988, Joe Besser was found dead at his North Hollywood residence of a heart attack, he was 80 years old. Fourteen months later, his wife Ernie died of septic shock on July 1, 1989.

“I love working for children, they are my best admirers, my best audience and my best friends,” he said. “My biggest emotion is that the children like me, as long as this happens, I will be done.”
