Jimi Hendrix Short Bio

James Marshall «Jimi» Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix , November 27, 1942-18 September 1970) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. Although his career only lasted four years, he is considered one of the most influential guitarists in rock history and one of the most famous musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as “indisputably the greatest musician in rock history”.

He was born in Seattle, Washington and began playing the guitar at 15 years of age. In 1961, he enlisted in the United States Army as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division and graduated the following year. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Clarksville, Tennessee and began playing some concerts at the well-known Chitlin ‘Circuit, where he got a spot playing as a supporting musician for The Isley Brothers and then for Little Richard with whom he continued to play until mid-1965. He went on to play with Curtis Knight and The Squires before moving to England in late 1966 thanks to Linda Keith, who also caught the attention of the Animals Chas Chasler bass player to become their manager. In a matter of months, Hendrix had already won three Top 10 singles in the UK with his band The Jimi Hendrix Experience: “Hey Joe,” “Purple Haze,” and “The Wind Cries Mary.” He rose to fame in the United States after his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. In 1968, his third studio album, Electric Ladyland, reached the top of the US list of hits; It was his biggest commercial success and his only number one in that country. At the time, he was the highest paid artist for his concert at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, before his death due to barbiturate intake on September 18, 1970 at the age of 27.

Hendrix’s musical influences were inspired by the American rock and roll and electric blues. He is known for using amplifiers with distortion, high volume and gain, in addition to being an innovator in taking advantage of the coupling generated by the guitar. He also helped popularize the use of the pedal with wah-wah and was the first to use stereophonic phaser effects in his recordings. Holly George-Warren of Rolling Stone commented: “Hendrix pioneered the use of the instrument as an electronic sound source. The guitarists before him had experimented with feedback and distortion, but Hendrix turned those effects and others into a controlled and fluent vocabulary as personal as the blues he started with. “

Hendrix received several awards during his life and posthumously. In 1967, the readers of Melody Maker voted him as the best popular musician of the year and in 1968, Rolling Stone named him musician of the year. Disc and Music Echo distinguished him with the title of best musician of 1969, while in 1970 Guitar Player voted him the best guitarist of the year. The Jimi Hendrix Experience entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Rolling Stone positioned its three albums Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love and Electric Ladyland, among the 100 best records in history and he as the best guitarist and the sixth best artist of all time.
