Jim Davis’s Biography

Davis grew up on a farm with his father Jim, his brother Dave and the 25 cats of his mother Betty. Asthma caused him to spend long periods bedridden, time that he took advantage of to draw. At the beginning he did not do it very well, but over time he improved his technique and decided to add texts to his drawings: a new cartoonist was born.

After graduating from college – where he met his wife Carolyn – he worked for two years in an advertising agency. In 1969, he began working as an assistant to Tom Ryan, the creator of the comic strip Tumbleweeds. Later, Davis created the comic strip of Gnorm Gnat – something like Mosquito Gnorm – which, although it was published in a local newspaper in Indiana, failed to sell to the national company of comic strip publishers Paws.

After five years publishing the stories of the aforementioned mosquito, Davis decided to create the cat Garfield. This time they bought the comics and began publishing in 1978 in 41 newspapers. He never thought that character would be so successful: currently Garfield stars in the comic strip with the most diffusion in the world, with more than 220 million readers and published in more than 2,500 newspapers worldwide. For Jim Davis, life with Garfield is simple: “If we treat the cat well the cat will treat us well”.

With this premise, he has not only created the fastest-growing comic strip in history, dozens of best-sellers translated into 26 languages, a television series, two films and thirteen special programs, if not all merchandising marketed in 69 countries.
